About ARRAS

ARRAS was founded in 1974. It is a society dedicated to the study, promotion and enjoyment of the various genres of rock’n’roll produced in the twenty year period following the second world war, 1946 – 1965, i.e. the “big beat of the fifties”. We are also concerned with the “roots music” that led to the development of rock’n’roll and was performed in the same period.

We are an association of people who have a passion for ‘50s style music and are a mixed bunch of enthusiasts, consisting of record collectors, music promoters, DJs, musicians, rock’n’roll dancers and folk who just love the music. Our club members come from all states of Australia and we have overseas members as well. We invite you to join us by downloading a membership application form or joining online.

We publish a professionally produced magazine that is published quarterly, called Big Beat of the 50s. Our magazine includes articles on all types of rock’n’roll, rockabilly, R&B, Group Harmony R&B (Doo Wop) and popular rock’n’roll, and some genres of “roots music” that were the forerunners to rock'n'roll such as Gospel and Country Music. A twelve month membership with ARRAS includes four issues of the magazine posted to your address.

ARRAS presents a 90 minute radio show every Saturday night called Shake Rattle and Roll on radio station 3CR, 855 on AM. Various presenters play their own favourites and tracks from other ARRAS members and private collectors, as well as listener requests. The show can also be heard via the net.

We have a committee that is elected annually, usually in July. Members are invited to stand for election as the society cannot function without members helping in this way. Contact the club president for more details. ARRAS has a small range of merchandise available from time to time and also your club membership card will enable discounts at selected stores and gigs. Social events and dances are held from time to time. Details will be given in the club media, the magazine and radio show, as well as on this web site.
