What's On in SA

SA reporter DJ Christine EastonWhat's Rockin' Around Australia

News from SA.

December 2011

by DJ Christine Easton

Hi, I’m Christine. I present Orange Blossom Special on Adelaide’s Coast FM 88.7 every Sunday between 2 and 4 pm.

At the time of writing, I am in recovery mode. A lot of dancing and talking with visitors from New South Wales and Victoria certainly made for one very exciting weekend.

The Kustom Kulture Countdown held at The Hwy, on Friday 4 November, with the Pat Capocci Combo, The Jamjets and Lucky Seven was the beginning.

The following Saturday night, six bands, Sons of Sun, Salvy & The Hired Help, The Saucermen, The Flattrakkers, The Detonators and The Lincolns performed for the Dia De Los Meurtos Fiesta. The venue being a huge shed at Whiteline Transport depot at Greenfields north of Adelaide. The event raised over $10K for Foundation Shine, the Society Helping Individuals Needing Encouragement. I feel very proud to be part of the Rockabilly and Rock and Roll community in South Australia and thank everyone who attended and contributed to such a successful night.

Danny and the Cosmic Tremors and No Brakes were in good company on Sunday with The Satellites and The Silverados and Killer Instinct. The man who we could not do without over the weekend was DJ Jess, keeping us all in time to a very tight schedule. Jess said, “what an awesome weekend” and I agree.

The ten year anniversary of Kustom Kulture SA will be held at The Hwy on the 17, 18 and 19 March 2012. The team who put in many hours of planning the Kustom Kulture event, are Chris Hayne, Damon O’Connor, Raymond P Moondog, Steve Mitchell and Francis Macri. The weekender will feature the Miss KKW pin up, Gen as tattoo artist in residence, a record hop on the Sunday, and a car display on Saturday, and all of Adelaide are holding our breath to find out who may be the surprise overseas band for Saturday night.

I mentioned our new, very young rockabilly band, The Swingin’ Switchblades in my last column. They were thrilled to be asked to perform with Dead Lucky and The Satellites at our top venue, The Gov on Friday 21 October. Local photographer Chris Oaten captured Liv Parker and Jacob Bain in action on stage. Bruce Garner on drums celebrated his fifteenth birthday at their first gig and Jacob celebrated his seventeenth birthday on the night at the Gov. I believe we will hear much more from this young threesome.

‘Til we meet again.
